A four belt heavyweight unification between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is one of the most called for fights in all of boxing, with the blue ribbon division not having had an undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis all the way back in 1999.

The boxing public has been left disappointed this year that the fight has failed to materialise, despite multiple periods of prolonged negotiations.

Despite the widespread clamour for Fury and Usyk to get it on, esteemed trainer Shane McGuigan has warned fans not to expect an entertaining affair, should the pair ever meet in the ring.

In an interview with Boxing King Media, McGuigan explained that he envisages a fight between Fury and Usyk being “terrible,” and one that ‘The Gypsy King’ will “bludgeon” his way to winning.

“I genuinely think that Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk is going to be a terrible fight. I don’t think it’s going to be an amazing fight.

They’ll try and outthink each other, and neither of them are massive punchers. There’ll be a lot of wrestling and holding coming from Fury to try and slow him down. He won’t have the pop to be able to stop him, but he’ll bludgeon him to win on points.

But I don’t think it’ll be a great fight.”

The way things sit currently, it’s unclear whether the fight will even happen for McGuigan to be proven correct, as Fury has decided to face MMA star Francis Ngannou in October whilst an undisputed clash with Usyk lays in waiting.

The boxing world must sit in hope, as it so often does, and try and find faith that 2024 is the year the sport’s glamour division finally crowns an unrivalled king.
