Edge faced the Undertaker back at WrestleMania 24. The two put on a 24-minute classic, but in the end, The Undertaker powered away to another victory to extend his streak to 16 consecutive wins.
Edge explains why he turned down opportunity to end Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak
During a conversation with Logan Paul on his “Impaulsive” podcast, Edge opened up on being offered the chance to beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania. However, the Rated-R superstar explained that he believed the streak was just as important as the World Championships.
He did not see a reason why the WWE had to throw away one of their marquee attractions by having him win a match that would not do as much for him as it would somebody else.
“When it was brought to my attention, or at least thrown by me as an option, I just thought ‘no,’ because it was just as important as the world championships at WrestleMania. So why take away one of our marquee attractions?”
He explained that he was already in the main event of WrestleMania. So, while it would perhaps help him a little, the promotion would be better off saving it for someone who could really use it.
Edge wanted Roman Reigns to end the streak
During the same interview, Edge revealed that he wanted Roman Reigns to be the man that would eventually take The Undertaker down.
“I’m already a made, man. I’m in the main event of WrestleMania, what’s it going to do for me? Sure, it would do something, I guess. But let’s save that. Let’s save that for somebody who can really use that boost. And to me, as the years started going, going, going, I was like [Roman] Reigns is that guy and let’s save it for that. But it wasn’t my call, obviously.”
Unfortunately, he did not get what he wished for. The streak was eventually broken by Brock Lesnar, a man many argue, did not need it.
The Undertaker himself has commented on it previously, stating that he too wanted Roman Reigns to be the one who would beat him at WrestleMania.
Roman Reigns and The Undertaker faced each other at WrestleMania 33. Unfortunately, the Deadman was too broken down by the point. Their match was not as good as many expected. Reigns did win the match, but at the time many believed that it was the Deadman’s final match and all attention was paid to that aspect of their match instead.
With the streak already broken, Reigns did not get as much out of his victory as Vince McMahon would have desired.
Regardless, Reigns is now the top star in the industry. While he may not have got there the way Vince or his peers wanted him to, he has got there and that is all that matters.
